Madison Elementary School PTO Code of Ethics
Purpose
This Code of Ethics serves as a guide for all members of the Madison Elementary School PTO, including officers, board members, volunteers, and general members. Its purpose is to promote an environment of trust, collaboration, and respect, ensuring that all activities and decisions serve the best interests of our students, teachers, families, and school.
- Commitment to Students and Education
- Act in the best interest of all students, supporting a positive and inclusive educational environment.
- Promote and encourage activities that enhance the learning experience and well-being of every child.
- Avoid favoritism or actions that prioritize the interests of a few over the needs of the broader school community.
- Respectful and Inclusive Behavior
- Treat all members of the school community with kindness, dignity, and respect.
- Foster a welcoming environment that values diversity in race, ethnicity, religion, gender, ability, family structure, and socio-economic background.
- Listen to and respect differing opinions, even in disagreement.
- Transparency and Accountability
- Maintain transparency in PTO decision-making, communication, and finances.
- Use PTO funds and resources responsibly and only for approved PTO-related purposes.
- Keep accurate records of meetings, votes, and expenditures.
- Promptly disclose any conflicts of interest or potential conflicts.
- Integrity and Professionalism
- Refrain from using PTO status for personal gain or political purposes.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive or private school or family matters.
- Represent the PTO and school in a positive and professional manner—both in-person and online.
- Collaboration with School Staff and Administration
- Work in partnership with school leadership and staff, respecting their roles and professional expertise.
- Communicate openly and constructively with administrators and teachers to support school needs and priorities.
- Volunteerism and Service
- Promote a spirit of volunteerism, understanding that PTO involvement is based on service to the school community.
- Honor commitments, follow through on responsibilities, and offer help to others when possible.
- Support and encourage the participation of all families, regardless of time, financial, or language barriers.
- Conflict Resolution
- Address concerns or disagreements respectfully, directly, and privately when appropriate.
- Seek resolution through open dialogue and, when necessary, involve the PTO board or school leadership to mediate.
- Upholding the PTO’s Mission
- Support the PTO’s mission to enrich the educational experience at Madison Elementary through family involvement, fundraising, and community building.
- Make decisions guided by what is best for students and the school as a whole.
Acknowledgment
All PTO members are expected to read, understand, and abide by this Code of Ethics. By participating in the Madison Elementary PTO, members agree to uphold these values in all PTO-related activities.
